Last week a “fire” took place in a Calpe ( Costa Blanca ) primary school and 165 children were evacuated in a record 4 minutes.Student and Faculty staff remained in the school to fight the fire.
It was of course fortunate that the “fire ” was of the simulated variety and the whole thing was a fire drill for the school. It was part of a two day course for fire fighters in the Alicante province.
It was designed to teach children how to react in a real emergency. It was held at IFAC Silene Infant School in Calpe. All of the youngsters and staff were involved in both the practice and the theory of tackling a fire on the premises.
The procedures included setting off the alarm , operating fire extinguishers correctly , evacuating the children safely and taking a roll call of everyone on the premises.
All school have to carry out fire drills as part of normal procedures to enable both the children and staff to do it as quickly and safely as possible. This fire drill was attended by a local councillor.

Mothers in Carlet , near Valencia on the Costa Azahar , became suspicious when the vaccination cards given to their children , after they had been vaccinated , had no reference number.
Now a paediatrician has been arrested for injecting the children with serum but no vaccination and charging the parents 70 and 90 euros for the “service “. Fifty children were involved and the excuse given by the doctor was that she “needed the money “.
She has also been accused by four adults who she charged between 400 and 800 euros for injections against the Human Papilloma virus.Once again they say it was only a serum.
The doctor was charged and released after she gave a statement in court and now the Health department will also investigate the case.
She has been working in Carlet for five years but has now been suspended. The concern of the parents was that their children had not been protected. The parents have had meetings with the Department of Health.

An inspection of the retirement home in Benissa on the Costa Blanca called “Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, San Joaquin and Santa Ana “deemed that the centre did not comply with minimum hygiene requirements.
Now the new owners of the retirement home are carrying out measures which will sop the establishment being closed down. This follows complaints regarding hygiene and care received by the Valencia Regional Government´s Social Welfare Department.
Staffing at the home was also deemed to be not enough with only 7 staff for 64 residents.Only one member of staff was a nurse. There was no doctor , psychologist or physiotherapist.
Press reports have stressed that the elderly residents did have a roof over their heads and they were fed but there was very little in the way of care. The home is about to take on 10 more staff. They will compromise 8 assistant nurses, 2 social workers and a manager.

In 1829 Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca suffered an earthquake that killed 389 people. The earthquake measured 6.6 on the Richter Scale.
The Costa Blanca still has regular tremors only they are generally to small to be noticed but they are recorded.
Now Torrevieja is to draft an action plan to indicate just what everyone should do should another earthquake hit the region.
The Torrevieja town hall has been forced into doing this by the Valencia regional government. They want all municipalities to have planned for the way in which they would react. This would include all emergency services plus health centres and hospitals, also the water authorities and other utility services.
A spokesperson for the Torrevieja town hall seemed to play down the importance in saying that the region had only a moderate risk of another earthquake. However a working group has now been set up and it will implement the regional government guidelines. The working group is made up of councillors plus heads of the various departments most affected in such circumstances .

It seems that Alicante Province has the highest incidence of black market traders in Spain. This was discovered by Social security inspectors.Over half of the cases detected in the Valencia region were in Alicante province.
The statistics from January to September in 2011 were obtained and published by the CCOO union. They show that over 11 million euros per month in social security payments are not paid .Out of a total of almost 7000 cases , 4000 were in Alicante , 2313 were in Valencia and 647 were in Castellon.
The CCOO has called for an end to a culture of fraud which hinders competitiveness. It appears that it is often impossible to trace who actually owns a business and so recover back payments and fines.People who do not pay cannot just use a lack of money for non-payment says one union.Well , yes they can if their businesses are not making any money. It is those businesses that are making money and who do not pay who are the cause of the problem.

The aim was to construct a museum in Villajoyosa on the Costa Blanca but now the Councillor for Culture says that the project is on hold but could be ready for the summer of 2013.
The company building the museum announced the delay last week , saying that it could not be ready for this summer. They stressed that this had nothing to do with money being unavailable from the regional government.Problems which were highlighted at the beginning of the project have not been resolved yet.
One problem related to the foundations of the building after there had been very heavy rain. This structural problem needed more thought. Then a rare bird was found nesting on the site.
Now the thoughts are to resolve the issues and to promote the museum at the next Fitur tourism fair in Madrid in 2013.

The Valencia regional government has withdrawn all of its subsidies to local councils for helping them prevent flooding. In so doing they have saved 3.6 million euros.
These subsidies helped to pay for road resurfacing ,repairing mains water supplies, flood defence systems , road resurfacing in rural areas and such important projects.
In November another 2.1 million euros was withdrawn and this was announced by Alberto Fabra the Valencia president. The reason was a basic one, they just do not have the money .He also stated that the economic climate in Valencia is a bad one.The 2012 budget has had to be cut because of this lack of money.
He went on to explain that any funding will need to be fully investigated before it is agreed or spent.Others who have been hit by the cuts are sporting clubs who will receive nothing and many of them will be unable to carry out their full programme of events this year.
The cuts will also affect investment in infrastructure investment and projects such as the final phase of the Via Parque in Alicante have now been stopped until things improve.
